Ayodhya Development Authority Plans ₹36 Crore Transformation of Bharatkund Into Major Spiritual Tourism Hub

Ayodhya: Ayodhya Development Authority is set to undertake a large-scale redevelopment of Bharatkund, with an ambitious ₹36 crore project aimed at transforming the historic Ramayana-era site into a world-class religious and tourism destination.

Officials said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed development has already been submitted to the state government, and construction work is expected to begin soon after approval is granted.

According to Anurag Jain, the project is designed to enhance the spiritual, cultural and tourism significance of Bharatkund while preserving its deep mythological heritage.

Located along the Prayagraj route south of Ayodhya, Bharatkund — also known as Nandigram — holds immense importance in the Ramayana. The site is traditionally associated with Lord Ram’s younger brother Bharat, who is believed to have stayed there during Lord Ram’s exile.

The redevelopment plan includes extensive beautification of temples and ghats across the area. Stone cladding work will be carried out at the ghats, while decorative pathway lighting will illuminate the entire complex, creating a visually striking spiritual atmosphere, especially during the evening hours.

The proposed project also includes the construction of a modern amphitheatre, landscaped gardens, public toilets and gazebos to improve the visitor experience. Authorities plan to introduce walkways, seating areas, drinking water points and expanded parking facilities to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the region.

Officials said the goal is not merely cosmetic enhancement but the creation of a fully integrated religious tourism destination with modern amenities that encourage longer visitor stays and improved accessibility.

Anurag Jain stated that the initiative would strengthen the local economy by boosting tourism-related activities and integrating Bharatkund more prominently into Ayodhya’s expanding spiritual tourism circuit.

The redevelopment project is part of a broader effort by the Ayodhya Development Authority to promote historically and culturally significant sites beyond the Ram Mandir, positioning them on the global tourism map.

Once government approval is received, work on the project is expected to move quickly, with officials expressing confidence that Bharatkund will soon emerge in an entirely new and grander form while retaining its sacred identity and historical significance.
